The review, which also details misconduct at the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, the FBI and the United States Marshals Service, covers the period from fiscal year 2009 to 2012.
House Oversight and Government Reform Committee chairman Jason Chaffetz, R-Utah, who called the report “stunning,” is promising to follow up on the report to “weed out those who risk our national security, embarrass the country, and skirt the law.”
“While the vast majority of employees do quality work, the bad apples highlighted in the report taint their service. We need to hold them accountable and, given the clear evidence in the OIG report, they should be fired immediately. The gross misconduct of DEA agents follows a disturbing pattern of risky and improper behavior afflicting Homeland Security and the Department of Justice,” Chaffetz said in a statement.
Sexy Fun Long Time 2 – Bali.
Bali is a fave’ destination for Australians seeking fun of all types. In 2014, nearly 1 million visited its stunning islands – likely many more Ozzies last year as Bali tourism keeps growing. And it’s no wonder – close to home, tropical beaches, low cost resorts and entertainment, culture, surfing and sex. In this post, we’re focusing on SEX, so you guys don’t make fools of yourself, or worse, get into trouble on your travels.
To get the real, inside scoop, I interviewed Malcolm Scott, an Australian author who lived in Bali for close to a decade and has published two books about Bali’s sex trade and underworld, ‘Bali Raw’ (Monsoon Books, 2012) and ‘Bali Undercover’ (Monsoon Books, 2014). Both books are available at monsoonbooks.com.sg, Amazon.com, and other booksellers.
AO: Straight off, what’s the biggest misconception that Ozzie tourists have about sex and prostitution in Bali?
MS: The biggest misconception, to my mind, would be a comparison between prostitutes that work in Western countries, like Australia, and working women in Southeast Asian countries, like Indonesia.
I’m sure there are a number of reasons Western women become involved in prostitution, and I don’t want to make too much of a generalisation. But I can imagine that drug addiction plays a very large part for some of these women. I also understand that drug addiction is considered a sickness, but a distinction could be drawn between what choices these individuals had when they first made the decision to become a working lady and what choices most Indonesian sex workers were given when they made the choice.
The reason most Indonesian girls become involved in prostitution in Bali, is a lack of education and poverty. The truth is most Indonesian sex workers don’t want to be prostitutes, but they have no other choice. I’m sure they would love to live in a society where social services took care of their fundamental needs, but they don’t. Most Indonesian ladies work in the sex industry so that they can support themselves, their children and their extended families, and that seems pretty admirable to me.
I should also point out that Indonesian working women do not like the term, prostitute. Using that term with a working lady would surely result in rejection, if not a slap.
Beautiful Bali seashore.
AO: I’ve heard that the sex-for-hire scene is in Kuta, Sanur and Denpasar. Is that accurate, or are the working girls found all over the island?
MS: It is correct to say that Bali’s sex industry is centred in the main tourist areas. It would also be fair to say that the activity takes place right across the island. There are a lot of reasons for this, ranging from command of the English language or personal choice to geographical or family considerations.
Look hard enough and you will find some type of establishment in the most rural of locations. Once, while driving from Kuta to Medewi, I pulled into what I thought was the Indonesian equivalent to a truck stop or roadhouse. This establishment was built into the side of a mountain, and it was isolated and situated between two towns. I wanted nothing more than to take in the view, relax and drink a coke, but the woman that greeted me made it abundantly clear that there was more on offer if I felt inclined.
AO: I’ve also heard that Bali prostitutes are found in massage parlours, bars and brothels, and they also can be hired from escort agencies. Does this cover the gamut? And where are the prettiest girls to be found?
MS: Working ladies can be found in these places, but some of the girls are very mobile. A working girl might ply her trade on the beach or in a shopping mall, for example. The trick is to recognise the woman’s intention and to remember that not all Indonesian women are working.
Any man traveling in Bali or wider Indonesia should treat all Indonesian women they meet with respect. Then if the lady happens to be working, she will find a way to let him know. In reference to the question, ‘where are the prettiest girls to be found?’, I would have to say that all Indonesian women are beautiful.
AO: What are prices like? Are they negotiable?
MS: Everything in Bali or wider Indonesia is negotiable.
